THE LAST WORD ON POLITICAL MURALS |
Rt.Hon John Hume with two of the artists Kevin and Tom outside the artists' studio in the Bogside. |
Nobel Laureate John Hume who recently launched this book described it as a "fascinating and entertaining book, bringing honour to our people and our city" For students of most disciplines The Bogside Artists of Derry have provided a panoramic window into living history. This is truly a unique book chronicling three decades of hectic civil conflict in Northern Ireland. Lavishly illustrated from the artists' own archives it is a large A4 size with 130 pages. It deals specifically with the famous gallery of twelve large-scale murals situated in Derry known as THE PEOPLE'S GALLERY that is visited each year by thousands of people from all over the world. This is the extraordinary and often moving account of the creation of the murals and the history behind them. But it is not all gloom and doom. It is a light-hearted breeze through the sixties as much as it is an invaluable potted history of The Troubles. "Work, Diego Rivera would be proud of." (world famous playwright Brian Friel). The artists, Tom, William and Kevin still have their studio in Derry. Recently they moved to a new studio at the junction of William Street and Rossville Street where their murals are situated. When they are not doing that they are usually catching a plane to some foreign city to address students on their lives and work. This book was written as a result of numerous requests from locals and tourists alike to write a follow-on from their original book called Murals. Back in Derry, the famed muralists conduct tours of their gallery. You can easily book on one of these famous tours via their website or just drop in for a chat if you happen to be in the neighbourhood. |
